During class this week, Octavia and Kelitha talked about the importance of reducing sugar content in drinks and informing the students about healthier options. The students were really excited to be making turkey tacos and using the fruit and vegetables from the class activity to make smoothies. It’s important to teach about food waste and using extra food to make healthy and affordable recipes. All the students come from diverse backgrounds but are willing to learn and taste different foods. One student asked me about sweet potatoes and its Spanish translation which is “batata”. She really enjoyed the fruit and vegetable activity and learned something new. Every week, the students take the recipes home and share them with their parents. It’s important for them to understand the importance of preparing meals at home and understanding where their food comes from.
