We have begun a Cooking Matters for Teens class at Children’s Harbor in Pembroke Pines. We have a great team of a nutritionist and a chef and ready to rock and roll. During the first class, Alicia our nutritionist volunteer, spoke about the importance of “My Plate”. She asked the teens questions on their cooking experience and their favorite food. She got them engaged in the lesson especially when she went over the food groups. One student was apprehensive about the class, but at the end she participated and had fun. Chef Jeff introduced the concept of “mise en place” which means everything in order. It’s important to be organized and have all your ingredients ready to go before you start prepping and cooking. He also went over the Black Bean and Vegetable Quesadilla recipe which was a crowd favorite. Stay tuned for next week’s class where we will learning about fruits and vegetables and making two yummy recipes.
